VMware Tools Help : Updating and Changing Installed Modules : Update VMware Tools

Update VMware Tools
The guest operating system checks for VMware Tools updates when you power on a virtual machine. The status bar of the guest displays a message when a new version is available.
To install a VMware Tools update, you can use the same procedure that you used for installing VMware Tools the first time.
For Windows and Linux guests, some VMware products allow you to configure the virtual machine to update VMware Tools automatically when the virtual machine is powered on. The status bar displays the message Installing VMware Tools ... when an update is in progress.
In Windows guests, after the update is complete, if you are logged in, a restart prompt appears for 30 seconds before rebooting. If you are not logged in, the guest restarts without prompting.
